Precious Teak along the highway.

North-South highway runs through the country. Some ten years ago the highway authority [PLUS] began planting teak trees along the highway .... The leaves are fairly large, and when they blooms, it's quite a sight.

Now they are beginning to chop the trees down. I am sure, the furniture industry will be smiling...

Photos were taken from inside the moving car and therefore not too good. I wasnt speeding beyond the 110 km/hr legal limit .... haha...

  1. Well, you speed demon, the pictures were actually pretty good I thought.
How long does a Teak tree live?
I just know they make a lot of furniture with it.
Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day.
    I appreciated your comments.

  2. What a shame they're all being cut down. It looks an empty space without them.

  3. Is this a fast growing tree? Love the wood, but know nothing about the plant. (Were you driving too?)

  5. Teak! To us it is outdoor furniture. To you it is a beautiful tree -- and now a tragic loss!!!

  6. I always wonder why they like to take down trees. Remember I told you about the stretch of Bangkok Rose? Everytime I pass by there, I could still remember those beautiful blooms. Now they are gone! Fortunately they left about 6 inches of the tree trunks with the roots. Given time, the trees will grow back ;-( But got to wait. Oh, I bought kucai today at the market :-D Have a wonderful day!

Teak will grow as long as any other tree in the jungle. Hundred of years. For a quick harvest, 15 years will do.... highway authority cut the trees down for fear of trees falling down posing danger to motorists and at the same time meet up the return of investment by selling them to sawmills.

I think they will replace the empty space with something else....

To satisfy Janet's query, i am glad to inform her, that I was driving then. The camera was on the dashboard and I just clicked for a few shots. Kakdah shot the rest....

A sustainable timber/furniture industry requires trees to be chopped down and replanted on a scheduled manner. I think the highway authority is using the same approach. therefore we cant really mourn about a loss, because soon we are going to witness a birth.

Dont worry Steph, soon Bangkok Rose will let out a shoot.... and may I ask what do you do with kucai?... fry?, steam? boil?... or do cucur udang?..

  10. > Val.. I think most trees tend to go straight up with limited side branches if planted close to one another.... The day will come when you be an excellent video grapher!!.. haha.

    have a great day

  15. Hmm...there is a lot of teak furniture sold in the US. I hope it's not being overharvested. Maybe they will plant new trees along the highway. -Jackie

  16. Yea jackie... sustainable forest management is currently the approach adopted by most countries, Malaysia included. What chopped has to be replanted.

    Thanks
