growing onions / tanam bawang

We are growing onions in pots; one rectangular pot and three round pots. Onions are always eager to grow. The moment the top sections were cut off and the onions put into soil, within two days  little shoots would appear. Why grow onions we may want to ask ourselves, I would say onions are easiest to grow. To keep enthusiasm of a new gardener, onion definitely is a must. It would make any new gardener happy to see onions producing leaves within days and the first set of leaves can cut off for omellette.

It was quite early around 8.30 am. Sunday mornings offer ample freedom to view plants and take pictures as we like. Other days, life is on a faster mode.  There are always new things that we learned about plants. The other day I realised that our passionfruit vines (markisa) opened their exotic flowers later in the day around 6pm. The next morning, the flowers folded up. I suppose insects will help pollinating the flowers throughout the night. Our life is very much daytime, we may not realise there are insects coming out at night and sleep as soon as the sun is about to appear. Nocturnal.....

It was early, so the shadows were long.....
I just played around with camera height to come out with a set of pictures about onions,
fifteen altogether, 6 in rectangular pot and 3 each in the round pots.

  1. I love onions and have planted them 2 years in a row, in the ground. They did just "ok". I ate them! May try containers next year! Great post.

  2. Hi Bangchik, i missed your garden. I also plant spring onions and that very small ones tasting like onions but i don't know the name. I just inherited the plants. Imagine me having those pots at the ledge of the 5th floor window near the aircon unit! In another 2 pots i have Chinese or upland kangkong, then together with the cholesterol plant i have ampalaya. I am so happy with them, but stressed when i am going out of town. Last dry season i hang them inside facing the glass window, and now that it is raining i just left them. The nutrients in the pots all leached out after a day of rain! Stressing me out! haha.

    1. Andrea..... you may want install retractable roof, stretched out on rainy days and pulled in when it's dry. That will help...

  3. Did you plant from seed? Can you give more details please? My 7-year old son tried growing onions from seeds and while we were only able to use the leaves, we were not able to harvest any bulb at all. I am not much of a vegetable gardener, in fact, the vegetables in the garden belong to my son. I would appreciate help regarding potted onions.

    1. Bom...... I grew them from onions bought from the shop. I just cut a quarter of the top section to expose them and shoots will find it easier to appear. Bulbs take a while longer to build up. While waiting we can harvest onion leaves once or twice.

    1. Rara..., each day is new to a gardener, beginner or seasoned. There is no real predictability with plants, because they are very secretive!!... I am glad you live there, precint 14, a quiet neighbourhood I was in for almost 3 years.
