Pegaga
Pegaga is as old as malay traditions. It's one of the easiest herb to find in the wild. It can adapt and will grow better in gardens. I even try growing pegaga in pots. The plant is primarily a creeper but it doesn't mind growing in plastic container. Both of us don't consume a lot, just two or three leaves will do as salad.

The Pennywort herb is a member of the dill and carrot family. Also known as Gotu Kola, Pegaga or Centella, it boasts numerous health benefits. These include increased youthfulness and vitality, improved eyesight and memory, relief from pain associated with arthritis and relief from insomnia.
Li Ching-Yuen, a Tai Chi Chuan Master, was rumoured to have lived for a staggering 256 years because of his daily use of Pennywort. Sri Lankan King Aruna was said to have given Pennywort the credit for giving him enough stamina to satisfy all 50 women belonging to his harem during the 10th century.

DeleteThis looks like a plant I grew in Chicago as a groundcover. I wonder if it's the same one? I never thought it to be edible.

Alice..., I read somewhere about the many species of pennywort. Over here, there is tradition behind pegaga as salad, therefore we know which type to take.
DeleteThis herb looks like it's made for me, for arthritis and insomnia, I used to dabble in herbal teas many years ago.

DeleteI grew pennyroyal in Virginia, is that the same plant? I will have to look it up. Interesting benefits with pennywort... ;-)

Deleteearlier this year I chanced upon pegaga at a local nursery, how excited I was n bought a small pot to grow in an empty part of our garden, since then it has spread n covered the space w beautiful pegagas, hv been making salad w sambal blacan, growing up we ate pegaga as urep, oh it was so delicious.

Pegaga is a crawling plants. We propagate using small sections of pegaga with a few nodes. Pegaga is available in most wet markets in Malaysia.
DeleteHi, I have this weed growing wild among the grass in my garden, but it looks different from the one you have. The one in my garden has completely rounded scallop-edged dark green leaves. Are these edible too? Would love to hear from you on this, Thanks.
