Rice leftover and the little birds

burung ciak
is the name of these little birds. They love the rice leftover of last night dinner.
The birds always stay in a group.

It's normal for Kakdah to throw away leftover rice  into the bin, tie up the plastic bag and place by the roadside for garbage lorry to take away. On hot days, Kakdah will put the rice on the ground, for the birds.

On that particular day,  Kakdah placed them on grass just beyond the eggplants. The little birds flew in and finished them off in no time. The birds are called burung ciak.

Gembala kerbau, another regular bird here, seldom come in group like burung ciak . I googled, and the information is as follows, Burung ciak is Tree Sparrow in English and the scientific name is Passer montanus

  1. And the Swedish name of the birds: gråsparv Which would translate to Grey Sparrow in English.

It's so lovely to see that we share the same view (well soemwhat, anyways..)

    Greetings, H.

  2. Dear Bangchik, Yes, the little birds do look very similar to English Sparrows but that is not so important as the fact that you are feeding them which is really nice. Do you have a place for them to drink. I do hope so.

It does seem incredible that it is so hot with you. How I should love to be resting in the shade of your tree with a good book.

Thank you for leaving a comment on my latest posting to which I have replied.

  3. They do look like some of our Sparrows here.It is better that you leave it out for the birds. Just look at them go after it. LOL! Nothing goes to waste in nature.

    They wake me up everyday.

  6. I enjoy watching them, too. I just filled up our feeders and it doesn't take long for them to empty them out!

  7. Hi Bangchik, those birds are plenty here too, they are seen in groups also even in Metro Manila. My Malaysian friend visited lastlast week and said it is hotter now in KL than here. I said maybe because you are nearer the equator by some degrees. By the way, it always show in my reader that you already posted the bulging radish with red root, however when i open it, it is always not shown. Is the problem with mine or your side?

  8. Excellent. I'm always running out of bird feed -- but I always seem to have a little leftover rice! The ground is totally covered with snow so the birds are hungry.

  9. I thought they looked very much like a Sparrow. I bet they love the days Kakdah leaves the rice out for them.

  10. They look very similar to our sparrows here. I wonder if we could feed ours leftover rice. But if they didn't eat it, I'd be afraid of attracting other creatures from the forest after dark...

We have the Chirping Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-Throated Sparrow, and House Sparrow in this part of the world. Of course, my favorite is the one with the nice melody. :)

  11. I can add Australia to the list of places where this little bird can be found!
You need to go a bit further North from me into New South Wales to find the Tree Sparrow, but we have plenty of House Sparrows hopping about my area.

Thanks everyone, for the visits and comments. So Sparrows can be found almost everywhere, Malaysia, Manila, Australia, UK, Europe, and US. They adapt well. Just like us I guess, we survive right from the coldest region to the burning hot desert. We human comes in different colour and size, but basically we are humans, men and women. The same with birds and sparrows specifically.

Kakdah normally put leftover rice outside for the birds. It is alright on hot days. But it will get messy on rainy days.

We dont provide a place for birds to drink .. not advisable here, for mosquito may breed....

I can distinguish the lovely chirps of burung ciak as birds sing in chorus early in the morning. The sound is short chirpy sweet melody.

    Cheers...

  16. I had no idea that birds like rice. However, with 4 kids and a husband, we never have leftover rice...

  17. tina ... Their antics is truly splendid, I agree with you. Tomorrow's Wordless Wednesday will be reserved just for that antic.. just wait.

Noelle ... With us, there bound to be leftover rice .... Sometime it ends up as fried rice. On lucky days, sparrows will get it.

  18. Oh so these are called Burung Ciak. I didn't know. They are the ones who lie to sit on electric cables. I always think of their safety when they do that - kena electrocuted... habis!

  19. They are very much like our sparrows in England - which apparently are a declining species here, which is very sad. I always give left over rice to the birds - they like pasta too!

  20. Stephanie ... yea, birds can do things we cant possibly do. They can fly and can rest on electric cable.

Cottage Garden ... Their love for rice is not limited to birds here, but in England too! That explain their characteristic; likes and dislikes. And pasta too? ~bangchik
