Hope Grows Day: March 2011 with roselle seeds giveaway

I am really looking forward for roselle seeds giveaway, ever since we tasted  the first roselle juice and jam in Tanah Merah.  The first harvest of 129 roselle did not however produced really good seeds. Most of them were not really ripe, therefore seeds are a little bit small and thin.  Big, full, and black seeds are what we are looking for.  The second harvest was last week, purposely meant for ripe and big roselle.  As the nuts cracked, there appeared great looking seeds, what we are looking for.

We reserve 20 packets of 10 seeds each to be given away as gifts for a start. I am visualising 200 seeds germinating in little pots, later transplanted in bigger pots or in the ground all over the world. Since our roselle has gone through quite a test over in Pantai Remis where it began in Rosiah's garden (my sister), Putrajaya where we grew them the last three years and now Tanah Merah, we are naming the variety as RBK, a short form for Rosiah, Bangchik and Kakdah. The post is specially made to join Hanni's  Sweet Bean Gardening
with her Hope Grows Day: March 2011   .

  4. So many seeds Bangchik! Just imagine all your roselle seeds from Malaysia, spreading and growing all over the world! Ive just sown my first roselle seeds from one healthy plant, and they are all germinating, cos I need more plants to get containers of roselle jam and juice like yours! Jadi tak payah la nak mintak dari Bangchik..

  5. Bangchik...I would so enjoy doing this but alas have no garden to show you something happening in...so I will leave your seeds to go to those who truly garden! I will look forward to seeing how the roselle does around the world.

  6. I like to have roselle flowers of my own, but our garden (actually mother's) is not good looking esp now during the dry season. I am gardening at my ofis window sill and my 5th floor condominium unit window. I can show posts of my window gardens, and I am sure it will elicit a lot of laughter. In our office i am the only one with window plants, horrifically trying hard to have greens. So it will be the Roselle World Project for Peace!

  14. Thanks everyone.

Roselle grow very fast, everyone that has grown this beautiful plant probably had known about it. Saving seeds is best done with mature fruits. I read somewhere, that seeds should be collected with second harvest, for roselle and okra or lady's fingers.

For first time roselle growers, good luck to you, but please bear in mind, that the plants wont last forever. With so many seeds collected, we can always grow again, somewhere else. but please not on the same spot!

On suggestion that there should be opportunity for Kakdah to display her kitchen secrets, I will squeeze in later. Kakdah is very possessive with her kitchen, almost out of bound! aha...

Anytime, roselle can be as beautiful as any other ornamental plant especially if planted in neat rows. They display beautiful flowers and bright red fruits. Many heads had turned as they walk past the garden.

I will soon post packets. Dont forget to leave address at this email: mylittlevegetablegarden@gmail.com

    Happy Roselleing!!!

  18. Hi, I just wonder if its better to plant roselle straight to the pot or I should germinate it first in the paper towel? I only have 5 seeds and better to use it properly. =)

    please advice.

    1. i am sorry for the late reply.... It would be best to use paper towel with only five seeds.
