TANDUK RUSA ~ STAGHORN ~ DEERHORN

Every plant has a story to tell, like us too, humans. This eleborate fern known locally as pakis tanduk rusa or staghorn /deer horn fern really traveled far. It was taken (through division technique) from my sister's place in Perak. Five hundred and fifty kilometers away, or 7 hours by car. I wonder if the spores can travel that far surfing through the sky with it's life-time natural dispersal agent, the wind. Spores are seeds for ferns, so small and light almost like dust.

The fern ended up  the large raintree, at the right side of our house.  It was placed in position by tying up with steel wire. After almost six months, the fern manage to grow and cling to the tree and we had removed the wire.

We measure the overall height of this gigantic fern..... a whopping 6 feet from top to bottom!!
To us, the staghorn fern is still a 6 month old baby...

  1. How marvellous - it is stunning.

I once worked in a garden (in England) that had a large heated glasshouse and we used to overwinter our stag's horn ferns inside and then tie them onto the trees in summer just as you describe. Of course, we had to cut them down in the autumn and return them to the greenhouse before the cold affected them.

I don't think ours could have been the same type as yours as I don't remember that large green disc at the base - but perhaps it is just the years passing that has made me forget that!

    1. Johnson, leaves start off as disc as you mentioned, then slowly grow up as upper leaves.....

  2. Yours is beautiful. I wonder what happens to mine. Do they die or live forever? (I mean in plant years).

    1. Fern will live forever......... Tanduk rusa can produce new growth around the main one...., so tanduk rusa wont die, unless we burn it or pour boiling hot water day after day...

    1. Mat jon........ Ada pernah nampak pokok ni di nursery, sedikit mahal. Saya berhajat untuk cuba semai anak tanduk rusa.., dengan spora. Kononya perlukan hampir dua tahun untuk dapat saiz tapak tangan.......

  6. we have a smaller version called an elkhorn on our tree. How did you "transplant" it? we have a few extra volunteers that I could move to other places.

    1. Transplant by cutting off the new growth and tie it ona tree...... It will grow.

  7. I was surprised when you said it is 6 feet tall! Taller than myself! I am an admirer only as I don't have the space (tree) for it.

  9. I love stories about plants and this is a beautiful story of a beautiful fern. I did not know these deerhorn ferns could grow so tall. We have them here as house plants in hanging pots, but that is nothing in comparison with those tall ones in the trees.
