Preparing the lawn

Lawn provides healthy green looking surrounding. We enjoyed such compound in Putrajaya, but Tanah Merah home is bare and red. Putting a row of  10 ulam raja, a row 7 roselle and 3 banana babies had provided some strategic early  landmark. The effort is not enough to turn the whole place green. A good and healthy lawn has to be the way.

Cowgrass has been my favourite which is rumput pahit to kelantanese. I was discussing with Rusli a local landscape contractor about turning the bare compound into a good lawn. The rate he is looking for is RM3 per square metre. Believe it or not, the rate was exactly RM3 per square 20 years ago when I was involved with a little bit of landscape work in Pahang. So not all things is on the rise.

Cowgrass is quite recognizable as we drive along the road and and look on the road side. Most football fields has cowgrass except for stadium which require the upper end variety of grass.  Recently I scooped a few patch of cowgrass as I walk to the fringe of the housing area. Just for fun, lets see if my fingers can turn the lawn green too. ...

  1. Nice to know that prices have not escalated much when it comes to cow grass. I use pearl grass, also a type of cow grass in my garden. No need to mow the lawn. Is the red soil fertile?

  2. Looks like you need to water the soil before you throw the seeds. Long time ago, people grew carpet grass and found such a lot of work when they didn't prepare the soil well.

  3. Sounds like an excellent plan, and it is nice to know that some things stay the same.

  7. ~belle - pearl grass which is the miniature version of cow grass, is nice and neat, but i love the zest of cow grass. Mowing regularly is the only snag with cowgrass. Its alright i suppose. The red soil not very fertile.

~ann - On some compound, carpet grass looks neat. Now is monsoon time, so no need to wet the soil.

~rebecca - i dont know why the price stays the same... filling up compound with good lawn does't seem to be popular in Tanah Merah.

~theanne and baron - Cow grass should grow fast on healthy soil.

~stephanie - yes you are right about my passion on vegetable gardening. First I have to tame the weather here...

~malar - the target is to have a good green lawn within six months.

  8. Best of luck with your new lawn, Bangchik! I like the look of the cowgrass. The soil that it's growing in the photo looks rather sandy, but if it will grow by the side of the road, it should grow anywhere!

  9. ~jgh - the red soil in the compound is rather clayey, so i add sand to make it workable, better drainage and so on. It should grow...
