CHILI - an attempt at big scale

The project is going on well, plants are developing well under Tengku Nadzion and his team. The chili should be ready for harvest soon, in 3 weeks time. The plot is at the back of our house in Pasir Gudang Johor.

Cambodia: integrated farming project.

Cambodia must have suffered from too many wars. Thank God, everything looks alright now, politic is stable, people are busy, economy is really developing. The other day four of us, We, Na and Khir visited Siem Reap, Cambodia for 3 days 2 night staying at Myhibiscus Hotel and  which is run by Malaysian company from Shah Alam on 10 year lease.

There was this school named "darul ulum" which is financed by a foundation that became our focus. A friend is keen to finance the running of hostel for five years as his community social service. I was roped in to look into integrated farming that will promise sustainablity. At least students will learn about gardening and chicken rearing. Fresh vegetables grown by themselves would be good for their diet and late afternoon gardening work out will flex both their muscle and mind. The school is far from anything else, almost to the border of Thailand.

I just wonder whether I am qualified to offer help on integrated farming. All I have is passion, nothing else. I studied Civil Engineering at degree level and Construction at masters level. Gardening is something that I learn through the so called university of life,  just at the backyard. No certificate, no diploma, just pure passion. To that school in Cambodia, I am offering passion!

Within a month, the whole integrated farming will be drafted. It's going to be organic, manual no automation. I wonder if any of the readers like to share their experience in such endeavour............

1. integrated farming
The space is big, it is going to be a farm definitely more than a garden. I have to collect inputs and ideas to come up with suitable integrated farming project design. There would be pathways, drains, a store, a section for poultry rearing, another section for vegetable and fruit trees. The area should be accessible to vehicles for loading and deliveries. A decent pathway right through to the hostel would be neat and welcoming.

a large empty space to be converted into integrated farming project,
with hostel at the far end, half completed.

2. Furniture for the hostel
We went round looking for furniture, tables desks and beds. There was this long street, with furniture shops one after another. Musa a Cambodian associate suggested buying a large uncut timber, then someone will cut  it into planks and assemble the furniture as requested. Huh, so interesting approach! Musa said it would a lot cheaper that way....

3. Bricks
We never use hollow bricks in Malaysia...., so definitely I was quite amused to see hollow bricks being widely used in Cambodia.

4.  Myhibiscus Hotel and Resort (formerly Angkor Monarch Hotel)
We stayed in Myhibiscus Hotel. The room was alright, swimming pool at the front, food and hospitality was excellent. Very affordable indeed.  I noticed a familiar vine zehneria of  cucurbitaceae family. I grew zehneria before in Tanah Merah but sadly had to leave them when we moved to Johor.

Before the end of the year, students staying in the hostel would have something interesting to do in the afternoon: grow vegetables and fruit trees, rear chickens, and learn the basics of organic integrated farming.  Soon they would learn about sustainability. The four of us would have to return to Cambodia once or twice to roll out the project. I am still looking for ideas.....

Roselle beyond juice and jam.

An email from Mr Ng caught me by surprise. Mr Ng, one of the food processing research group from local university nearby, is looking for a few kilos of  fresh roselle supply for research.  It's interesting to know how blogging connects people well, gardener and researchers. I know Andrea from the Philippines is a horticulturist and now is Mr Ng a food processing researcher. Last year a group of students from University Kelantan Malaysia came to our house in Tanah Merah for roselle seedlings for their entrepreneurial program. So, gardening world is not limited to relationship between man and plant but between man and man also.

Ng mentioned about roselle having anthocyanin , being one of the most beneficial content in roselle. The research team is currently looking into the preservation of anthocyanin after going through drying process. They are comparing the sterilisation effect between common drying methods and their new technique. Tengku Nadzion who is currently involved with 2000 cili project will look into it, and embark on strategic collaboration that will benefit both parties. In the meantime Suzana who is steering the overall entrepreneurial programs will not miss the opportunity of bringing up programs beyond the basics. I hope Bakar will take his team and serat nenas project or pina in Philippines around the whole spectrum:- cultivation, production, marketing, fiber extraction, clothes, souvenir items etc that will eventually benefit the whole community of Pontian.

The fruits are undoubtedly benefitial to us, but the flowers are equally good
so beautiful, pinkish creamy colour that will sooths tired eyes.
And the flowers are good from any angle.

Roselle growing at the backyard of our house, will soon find it's way to the food processing research center in a nearby university. I am happy to see home gardening evolves into the depth of academia that will benefit mankind in many ways.

The future of roselle
We germinated a lot of roselles recently, now in black polybags. It's about 100. They would be used as the next batch to replace the current ones, and some would be issued out as giveaways .

100 roselle seedlings waiting.
roselle has every potential
to brighten up anybody's garden. the flowers are beautiful,
and the fruits are tasty as juice and jam.

GROWING CHILI on a large scale.

It's a large scale farming adventure, of 4000 chili kulai and solok variety at Lubok Joh, labok Kelantan. It's a primarily an entrepreneurial endeavor on a rented 2 acre plot. Selected youths took part under the supervision of an experienced farmer Wan Azua. The project was initiated middle of last year, as we were busy with rooftop gardening  in Tanah Merah KelantanThe project was rolled out in October last year towards the end of my stay in Kelantan, and five months later it is showing clear sign of success. The final success of this project hinged on the number of entrepreneurs that can be developed. And we also try to devise a mechanism that the project benefits community in a lot of ways.

I was invited to the harvest festival.
Both of us turned up, myself and Kakdah.
It was both satisfying and fun.

it's a rain free environment,
with clear plastic sheet as roof

The two acre plot is fenced up as protection against goats and cows.

Kakdah and Wan Azua
Kakdah was discussing with Wan Azua.
We know him quite well.
He is a computer expert, graduated from US,
worked for 5 years with international company as an engineer,
then quit to be a full time farmer.

the young entrepreneurs
 learning the trick of marketing.
They will soon understand that farming is not only about toiling with soil,
in fact it ends with how much can be sold.

About 200 people turned up.

One red chili among the greens.
The produce is 2000 kilo for the first month, it is expected to increase reaching the peak in May to almost 4000 kilo a month. When monsoon comes later in the year, they will reap maximum profit, as price may easily double, and most open farming would succumb to rain badly....

We took home 5 kilos of lada solok and 15 kilos of chili kulai. I am happy to see the farming project going on well and bear fruits. I am sure it will create ripples and benefit the whole community in a big way. Such project has a glimpse of "dare to dream" element in it. Over here in Johor, we will embark on similar project on 2000 chili as starter which will later evolve into large scale farming on a 10 acre plot next year. Our associate Tengku Nadzion will be heading the project. I wish Tengku Nadzion and his team GOOD LUCK on  a noble and very enterprising endeavor of 2000 chili centil. Planting will be done end of March.

Here is Bangchik!

I am responding to Malar's specific question "where is bangchik?" among  the 30 photos displayed covering the whole spectrum of  rooftop gardening - harvest festival! 23rd of July 2011 . A colourful event  indeed  with vibrant pictures as Amir noted,   but I purposely left  out the identity of Bangchik. Those who know me, would quickly recognise Bangchik by just looking at the short spiky hair, with heavy tan complexion. It's hereditary not sunbathing overdose!... aha.

The other day Kakdah called our daughter Farah,  but Adlina (our eldest grand daughter) quickly grabbed the phone, yelled and giggled  "Opah, Along nampak TokAyah dalam surat kabar!" (in English, "Grandma, I saw grandpa in the newspaper!")  She recognised the short spiky hair, more white than black  in Berita Harian 28th July  page 11 varsity section..... aha. So that is Bangchik.

Yesterday around 10.30am, a guy from New Strait Times, a young lady from  national daily Berita Harian and a photographer came  to do coverage on rooftop gardening. The photographer was busy zooming and clicking all over. They will let us know when the article on rooftop gardening will appear. The three young entrepreneurs were smiling and perspiring under the hot sun, harvesting Chili Centil, while the photographer was  busy looking for the best angle and mood and Bangchik kept shifting his role as gardener-blogger and a professional. At the same time I am visualising the busy schedule ahead when I answered yes to Jayanthi Naidu's request , 2 articles a week for Brimful - online lifestyle mag  in the making...

I had been presenting myself as gardener-blogger in my little vegetable garden blog,
but not much on my professional existence.
So that is bangchik for you Malar.
