Tumeric / Kunyit in polybags, multipurpose.

Being passionate about growing plants  bring me into having 10 large polybags of tumeric or kunyit. It's the portability, being able to shift as we like. At first the polibags of tumeric act as buffer zone to markisa or passion fruit base. I don't want weeds or grass to advance to the base. They are doing fine. Markisa is getting stronger, mature and fruiting, so the role of polibags is reduced.  The ground becomes cooler a little bit. Polybags thus become edgings to the vines.


Two bags are shifted to the other side, making full use of spare drip outlet.

Why tumeric bloom?

 

  

  

Tumeric do produce flowers even though not for propagation purposes. Tumeric continuity over zillion of years is still through rhizomes. The flowers are elaborate, like the crown of pineapples, layers after layers. Not for seeds and not for scent too. I haven't seen bees coming near to suck nectar, if there is any. I guess plants are programmed to produce flowers to brighten up the earth!

Tumeric or locally known as kunyit has been in the garden for almost 2 years.   Rhizomes will build up  as the plant mature. When the plant is about to dry up, they will be dug up.  It is about this time, that tumeric will produce lovely flowers at the base. Rhizomes will be cleaned up and saved. Some will be transplanted at a different location. I seldom see tumeric leaves being bored, smeared or eaten by insects. It must be the strong smell that has been keeping insects away. But not this time!......

The way they bore holes with specific intervals is fairly unique and artistic. I put  pictures here to warn gardeners about insects artistic attack on tumeric  leaves.... haha.
