Moringa flowers - SECOND WEEK

Plants behave differently. Each has its own peculiarity as when to flower and when to bear fruits. Our single moringa tree has its first burst of flowers. Its all white except for slight yellowish filaments. Within a week, the buds open up the pure white petals, for insects to come and enjoy the taste of nature. The nectar!

Putrajaya Backyard Vegetable Garden

A blue flower appeared one day.

Given the right temperature and moisture, seeds will germinate and grow.  We humans normally will germinate and grow plants and trees of our own choice.  The rest of plants will grow by themselves as self seeding or dispersed by birds, animals, wind and water.

This particular plant appeared behind one banana tree.  It had grown to a considerable size with beautiful light flowers before I notice it. The seed must have been brought there by wind. I love the rich green colour of the leaves, and the soft purple flowers, so I have them spread around the backyard garden, as border.

The little potted plant is hanged close at the fence, facing the hot sunlight.  While it needs sunlight to bloom, the very same sunlight scorch the older flowers a little bit especially now. No rain for two weeks, it is hot.

but the flower has an interesting colour -  delicate, deep and rich orange.

and both of us don't know the name of the plant. 

Kakdah suggests that it probably is a dwarf variety of periwinkle.  The flower has five petals therefore resembles periwinkle, but the stem is a little soft which is not periwinkle's characteristic.

I suppose the experts among readers would know.

Square Vegetable Bed with ubi kemili

1. There is quite a variety of vegetable beds at the back of the house. Six identical rows of narrow rectangular beds are the focal points placed a few steps from the back door. Two wide rectangular  beds at the far back and two square vegetables beds more or less complete our gardening focal areas. Honestly with the current work schedule, I cant possibly look after them that well. So some vegetables are overgrown, too many weeds and some empty ones had been empty for too long.

2. When we had to be away at weekends, then gardening is terribly affected, since weekends offer the most valuable time for garden overhaul, but for square vegetable bed with 11 ubi kemili plants, light mulch of dead leaves put weeds in control.

3. I have to admit, I had not mastered the technique of growing this particular plant.  In Kelantan last year, ubi kemili or ubi keling plants grew beautifully, but ended with no tubers.  I will work out something to make sure there would buckets of tubers from the eleven plants.

4. Squeezed between hibiscus island and the wide rectangular vegetable bed, are flowering plants. Two periwinkles and a few clusters of zinnia. It wasn't as tall as zinnias we grew in Putrajaya many years back, or may be these are the dwarf type. But the colours are really mixed, white, red, pink and yellow....

Hibiscus is the earliest to be planted, with the rest of vegetables late last year. It somehow adds colour to the garden. The flower is creamy  with red in the middle. There bound to be one or two flowers blooming everyday. That will attract kakdah attention as she ventures into our vegetable garden or as she walks up to the cloth lines situated at the far end.

Although there isn't much colour to look at, I do find it intriguing how the cornsilk (hairs at the top of corns) change colour, from white to brown as it gets older. Humans do the reverse, grey hair towards the end.......

I have been delaying putting seedlings into the garden. To start with, marigolds don't attract Kakdah attention as much as roses.  I have to decide myself where to put, since marigolds are not in kakdah's list of treasured items. Finally the matured seedlings end up in a row by the edge of our large vegetable bed. The stakes are for protection, not against animals, but our grasscutter!!
