Garden Freshness

Garden will freshen tired minds and limbs, but where exactly is the source of the magical "freshening effect". Flowers being colourful and beautiful would definitely be the major source. But lets look at the fresh and shiny young leaves and absorb the freshness....

Coleus picking up.

 

We pulled out the old coleus end of last year and threw them under our aging ulam raja. With the current rate of rainfall, there sprouts roots and shoots at the stems. Under the bright sun, their multicolour is so sweet and refreshing... I decided to leave them where they are now....

Artwork on tumeric leaves.

 

  

  

  

Tumeric or locally known as kunyit has been in the garden for almost 2 years.   Rhizomes will build up  as the plant mature. When the plant is about to dry up, they will be dug up.  It is about this time, that tumeric will produce lovely flowers at the base. Rhizomes will be cleaned up and saved. Some will be transplanted at a different location. I seldom see tumeric leaves being bored, smeared or eaten by insects. It must be the strong smell that has been keeping insects away. But not this time!......

The way they bore holes with specific intervals is fairly unique and artistic. I put  pictures here to warn gardeners about insects artistic attack on tumeric  leaves.... haha.

New shoots to look at, and bilbo too.

 

 

 

 

 

Babies, new blooms, new buds, and young shoots have something in common. They invariably are gorgeous looking, fresh and shining..... The smell is sweet.....

Who doesn't like the look and smell of babies?

Bilbo, the gardening ambassador

I just read about Bilbo whereabouts.  Gittan picked Putrajaya as the next peace mission for this Honorable Gardening Ambassador. I had given ample warning to Gittan  about our hot and wet weather. I wont allow him to walk around naked. I warned about snails and slugs too.... Once, Gittan  has contacted me through email, I will pass the full address. Both of us [bangchik and kakdah] will be waiting for his arrival!!!... and he can leave behind sweaters, jackets and scarfs. We will buy tropical dress, with color of his own choice...... .....  So  Bilbo On the Move again!

Shade of Coleus ~ green

This coleus looks different from the one posted here , Coleus having combs. I am not too sure if they are of different variety. Could the sunlight has anything to do with this? The one with pronounced reddish edge in the earlier post are more exposed to sunlight. This particular coleus, not hidden much , but I observe that it does less sunbathing!... I guess the heavier green patch is a way to maximise photosynthesis....

Tapioca after heavy pruning.

We did heavy pruning recently. All branches gone. Out of the many tapioca plants, we keep only 2 plants, the rest were pulled out. .... We managed to get quite a good harvest of  the roots (ubi kayu), enough for  afternoon snacks. If the roots  turn out to be fluffy, we call them "empuk".  That's awfully nice.., and has rural feel in it and definitely very nostalgic..... When roots are too matured, they become so hard and woody

But new shoots appeared within days.... With such zest, I wonder if plants ever get caught up with obesity.... hmmm...
