MUSHROOM ~ our little project.

It is almost a year now, that we dont buy mushrooms anymore. It is always here, at a little corner of our semi-detached home in Putrajaya, Malaysia. I stack them, the bottles or media on a shoe rack. These bottles need cool environment, therefore we spray them with water twice a day. Once the bottles are opened, mushrooms will shoot out within five days. Pluck them out, close the bottles for 10 days and open again for the next harvest. Each bottle will last for 5 to 6 harvests, after which we can dump them and will decompose. The contents are mainly rubber tree sawdust!... At the moment there are 20 such bottles at home. A bottle costs RM1.50. Hmmm..... Interested?

That mushroom is locally known as cendawan tiram kelabu. Other sites will explain this mushroom in greater detail... (click>) Cendawan Tiram Kelabu, or this Cendawan915

The three perias are from our little garden,
a section we call Batas Kitchen.
It is less than a meter away from the kitchen.

  1. Interesting article! We have rotting trees in our woods that give us Oyster Mushroom after most rains. You have to beat the bugs to them first.

  2. Thanks randy for dropping in,

Yes, some will find mushroom in the woods even here in Malaysia ... only we have to be extra cautious not take home the poisonous ones...

  3. It really is great to grow your own mushrooms and vegetables. Saves money during this global financial crisis even so it is more safe as you use organic fertilizers ..

  4. FJL,

If asked on why I do gardening, I think it must be the passion and the love of it, and as an outlet to energy and creativity. But of course, we save a bit... haha. Our plot is small for the longan and mangga wani like yours.....

  5. Hi Bangchik & Kakdah, I am curious. Where can I get bottles of this mushrooms at RM1.50? I haven't known anyone who grows their own mushrooms. Both of you are the first. I find it very interesting. Should be fun!
